You all thought I was going to get all political on you, huh? I'll save that for next week. Today, in honor of the upcoming elections I am holding my own polling.
Time to vote, ladies and gentlemen. Which one is best??? Please limit your vote to 1 picture for me and 1 picture for the sexy hubby.
#1. This one is me my graduation year... 1994. Sweet, eh? Dalen laughed when he saw it because he said it actually looks like one of my old school photos. Should I be offended?
#2. This one is the year my mom and dad graduated from highschool. I think I look pretty hot, don't you?
#3. Or, how about this one... from '78. The one from my birth year was awful, so I had to branch out a couple of years to find this one.
The fro picture is a MUST!
Now for Dalen's pictures- ooh! sexy!
#1 (the year his mom graduated)
#2 (the year he graduated) - hey man, are you "hangin' tough?"
or
#3 (the year he was born)
Voting polls are open now. They will close midnight tomorrow (well, probably not since I haven't figured out how to stop comments after a certain time, but I wanted to sound official). Remember, vote for the person- not the party! heehee!

My own personal "Cake Wreck"
Most people know that I love to bake and cook. I am usually pretty good at it too. I especially love to bake desserts because I heart SUGAR! I have a major sweet tooth (I have a funny story about a sweet tooth comedy act, but I'll save that for a later date- if I remember).
Well, this morning some friends and I had a fabulous "Happy Divorce" party for another friend of ours. I know this sounds weird, but this really isn't a bad thing for her. She is like 60-something and hasn't known where her husband has been for the last 8 years. He calls every so often for money, but that is about it. So this really wasn't a sad thing for her. She showed up and actually had tears in her eyes- I am thinking because she was touched by the support she felt, not because we chose the wrong shade of red. It's her favorite color- but it has to be the BRIGHT red, no dark, blue based red or maroons for this girl! Anywho- I was in charge of the dessert, and going with the theme of red I thought that I would make a strawberry shortcake dessert. I love it with angel food cake the best, so I went to a couple of stores and they told me they don't have any because it isn't strawberry season anymore. NICE! So I had to go with a box mix, which I have never tried with an angel food cake. I figured it would be an adventure and a learning experience. It sure was.
My thoughts have always been- when you are cooking/baking something for the first time I need to follow instructions to the letter, after that I am free to have at it with my own ideas. Well, I followed the instructions...especially the one that specifically says (and I am quoting directly from the back of the box), "Do not use a Bundt cake pan or angel food pan that is smaller than 10" x 4", or the batter will overflow." Well, I have a supreme Bundt cake pan, bigget than 10" x 4", so being confident that I was following the instructions I had at it and put the cake in the oven.
It wasn't long before I started to smell burning. There have been a couple of spills in the oven before - hey, this happens when the oven is actually used. I decided to do some checking though, and sure enough this is what I found.
Actually, when I first opened the oven the cake was about 4 inches over the top. What in the world. I think it was a humbling experience for me, though. I need to be put into my baking place. Really, I will never be a Martha Stewart, Emerille, or even Julia Child. I am just little old me, who can't even get an angel food cake to turn out right.
The best part of this whole thing is actually right now because as I am sitting typing this out I have the oven on auto clean and it is STINKIN' up the house. Kylie came running in to my office and said there was smoke in the kitchen. Of course there is, the cake is being burned to ashes as we speak. We will be holding a memorial service for the cremated ashes later this even. All those wishing to pay respects or send condolences may do so in the comment section of this post!
Theme music for this post- Burning down the house by Talking Heads.

Witches, ghosts and goblins! Oh My!
Last night was our ward Halloween party. It was great. We actually had a dinner this year and I thought it was so good. Potato Bar- need I say more? Okay, so you all probably have no idea how much I love potatoes. It was a definite bonus part of serving a religious mission in Idaho! Lots of potatoes and I learned how to make them just about everyway possible. Also, I learn what potato flakes are made from and also boxed dehydrated potatoes, and there is no way you could get me to eat them! ... Unless it was the last thing to eat in the world and I hadn't eaten anything for 83 days- and then I'd still have to ponder if I could really down them!
Back to my story about the party. The costumes were really fun! My kids had a blast being princesses, an indian and Luke Skywalker.
The one on the right is my Ultimate Mischief Maker Princess in her favorite color!
Princess Bride with her face painted. We don't like to go anywhere without the plug. I couldn't find a "wedding themed" pacifier. I thought about the "something blue" idea, but she is a girl and I wasn't keen on getting her a blue pacifier just for this occasion.
Our cute friends- Abigail and Shanna. Shanna is so good to dress up. I am a scrooge when it comes to Halloween.
This one probably only means something to those of us who are related- but Emily looks like the spitting image of her grandma, who is on a mission- my aunt! Loved this costume, so did the rest of the ward- we all knew who she was dressed as!!!
And lastly... the finale every year (and the most anticipate part of the evening for me...well, that and the candy)...
The bishopric- this year- SUMO Wrestlers! They really get into the act.
Hope you all enjoy this one! I haven't decided on the theme music for this one, so if you read this post before I get to it- sorry- come back later.
Update- In honor of Halloween (it's as close as I can get to honoring at least) I submit Thriller by Michael Jackson as the theme song of choice.

Who am I?
I found this on another blog and loved it. I love to read so I was curious to find out what character I resemble and was pleasantly surprised by this one...
Yeah! I don't think I am really like her, but I think it made me feel good about myself today, and that is always helpful! Who are you?

Student of the Day
I am totally a proud mom. My son is such a great little guy. Last week he came home with a ribbon pinned to his shirt, proudly announcing he was the "Student of the Day" at his school. Last year Kylie got that award and this year I was blessed to have my son get the award. We may not be a perfect family, but I am thinking I have some great kids. He kept the ribbon on his shirt for the rest of the day so he could make sure his dad saw him with it on.
The school also gives a folder of fun prizes to the honoree. A great pencil, a gift certificate for free crazy bread at Little Skeezers and a fantabulous gift certificate. He was awarded the student of the day for "Always coming to school with a smile on his face." I love my bud!

WE GOT TICKETS
Last night as I was driving to work I called my friend, Laina, to chat. As I was passing a local attraction I noticed the large electronic billboard flash the words "TWILIGHT tickets". I didn't know if it was announcing a date or if they were already on sale, but I started to scream. Laina, I am sure, could not understand a word I was trying to say, but over the next few minutes I talked to her as she got online and checked the theaters around her for tickets. We wanted to get the theaters that have reserved seating. Long story short- we got tickets for the 11:59pm showing of TWILIGHT the movie for opening night. YEAH! Thank you to Laina understanding my crazy talk last night. And a special thank you to Melinda for her brilliant maneuvering in getting enough tickets, close to each other for a most anticipated, fun girls' night out.
In honor of the the movie, today's posting theme song is a song that totally reminds me of the books- Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis.

And then there were 3
I know, you just can't get enough of me today. I am trying to make up for my lack o' blogging. Is it working?
This morning I was in the shower trying to make myself wake up. Usually when I am in the shower Dalen has already left and the kids are up reeking havoc (is that how you spell that?) in the house. To keep my "Mischief Maker In Training" aka Malia safe from the "Ultimate Mischief Maker" aka Britin, I bring her into the bathroom with me. I pop the iPod into the portable speaker thingy, and bust out the music while I shower. It is a 2-fold bonus. I get to sing in the shower without hearing myself sing and it usually keeps Malia dancing for the 5 minutes I am getting clean. Today, however, it didn't quite work. She danced, but with some "props." Ladies, I know you know what I mean when I say that it is needful to keep the feminine items close by in case of any unforeseen happenings (like starting the painters a day or 2 early). HAHA, I read that term in a British book and thought it was funny. Anyway, MMIT (Mischief Maker In Training) decided they were great fun to dance with. I told her to put them back and watched for a minute as she crazily shoved everything back in the drawer.
PS- The first picture is actually of Malia picking up for the second time. I don't have a waterproof camera. Being the mom-blogger that I am, I called for my son to bring the camera to me as soon as I had a towel wrapped around me.
PPS- I got my speakers working. Don't know how this happened, but the speakers got unplugged and then plugged back into the wrong place. Could this be the underhanded workings of UMM (Ultimate Mischief Maker)? We may never know.
PPPS- Now that I have the speakers working I have a new theme song for this posting- Mess by Ben Folds Five.

What Happens When Mommy Gets Sick?
2 postings in one day.
Have you picked yourself up off of the floor?
Okay- so Earlier this week I had to go to the dr... twice. Just for me. Monday it happened to be a female-type of infection. Enough said about that. I was dumb enough to think that I could get better on my own. Not so, my young Jedi. I needed the force to heal me, or at least some antibiotics lovingly prescribed by a kind and wise dr. who told me to NEVER wait that long again when I feel that kind of pain in that specific area. He was worried about my kidneys, yikes! On top of the medicines I am taking to get over that, he also counseled me that if I feel ANY back pain in the next couple of weeks I am to get into the dr. immediately. That didn't freak me out or anything!
So, the next day I woke up completely deaf in my left ear. What in the world? Did some random thing in the universe happen where my body got a memo that it was a great idea to just fall apart and catch every infection known to man? Nope, it is just a regular, run of the mill, viral infection in my ear compounded by the pressure change in the atmosphere that has caused all of the crazy weather we've had lately. Did you all get that? Didn't think so. I have an ear infection. I haven't had one in like 20 years. The dr. thought that this would make me feel young, since that is something generally linked to younger kids. Oh no. Didn't make me feel young. Made me feel old. I am falling apart!!! Since it is only a viral infection all I have to help with the ear pain is drops. Once again, picture this (ha, I said it again)... tilting your head to the side, as flat as you can, opening up the earway, and dropping in 4 drops from a little bottle. But wait, there's more- you need to lay down for at least 5 minutes to allow the drops to work their numbing magic on your inner ear. I don't know about any other mother, but WHEN do we have 5 minutes every 4 hours to just lay down? Anyone? Anyone? Okay, so I have more than that to blog (at least I make time to blog) but if I am in a laying-down-type-position there is a siren that goes off in my house alerting all children in a 5 mile radius to come jump on me, ask me questions, start throwing things, needing their diapers changed, bums wiped, etc. There is no peace for the recovering mother. I have had to take to putting the drops in as best I can, holding my head sideways for about 30 seconds (that's like 4 hours in mommy time) and pushing a cotton swab in to keep the medicine from draining out. Lets hope it works.
PS If you call and I don't answer the phone it is because I cannot hear you! The cotton swab is making me even more deaf than just the ear infection, but at least the pain is subsiding.
PPS Sorry, yet again no music change. You'll forgive me, won't you?

Field Trips
Jacob got to go on his first field trip yesterday. YEAH! All he has been asking since he got home is, "Can I do my punkin now?" Let me translate- he got a pumpkin on the field trip and he wants to carve a scary face on it. Well, since the other chillins don't have a pumpkin to carve yet I said he had to wait until we could get one for everyone. Apparently that translates into child language: "Ask me again in 2 minutes, I'll probably change my mind." I didn't get the translation correct I guess, so every 2 minutes I had to repeat, "You'll have to wait until we can get a pumpkin for each of your sisters." I am thinking about investing in a translation book but all I can find on the internet are English to Spanish, English to Germany, etc. There is no Adult to Child translation books. Who knew? If any of you out there know where I can get my hands on one that would be much appreciated!
UPDATE- Now that she is back I'll fill you in on Britin's field trip. (The title of the post is in the plural, in case any of you missed it.) She also got to go to a pumpkin patch. I am thinking she was in 7th heaven (not the tv show). When I picked her up she was glowing with pride, holding her new pumpkin she picked out all by herself.
When she got home Jacob busted out his pumpkin and they compared. I have to tell you- I was not ready to hear the following words come out of my 5-year-old's mouth. "Hey, mine is bigger than yours." WHAT? Oh, you mean the pumpkin. Yup, it sure is, but hers is a great one too. My kids are taking after my OCD tendencies- check out the symmetry of those beauties!
By the way- no theme song change for today. My speakers aren't working and I can't choose an appropriate song without first listening to make sure it fits. Sorry fellow bloggers, you'll have to keep on with the Eye of the Tiger until my sexy hubby can get those miracle hands working on my computer.

OUCH!
Let me set the stage for you all...
At the church, quilting. So much fun. Lots of ladies, lots of gabbing.
Picture this (I've always wanted to say that- kinda):
Sitting on a chair at a quilt, tying it when I hear right next to me- a chair crashing and a scream. Malia had pulled one of the folding chairs down on top of her. The back lip of the chair slammed right into her right eye. Less than 10 seconds passed from the time she pulled it on her to the time I picked her up. It was already puffing up and bruised. The girl had to have popped a blood vessel or something, because it was the fastest black eye I have ever seen.
We tried to head off accusations of child abuse to no avail. Apparently people think really highly of us. An unnamed friend even told me at church (once the black eye was in the really attractive yellow/green/blue phase) that if she hadn't been there to witness the biffing up of the eye that she would have thought some foul play had happened. Nice friend! So, over the past week I have taken photos of the various stages of Malia's first (and hopefully only) black eye.
First day- not too colorful, but pretty swollen. Yes, that is Dalen's nose. I never claimed to be a great photographer.
Much more colorful, and still swollen. I tried for a better picture, but she is not a photo opportunity kind of girl. The flash this close ghostifies her face (that is a Julie-ism for those who don't know/think that it is a real word).
Today- almost gone, but still looks bad. The doctor thought it was a smudge when I went in for an ear infection yesterday. Yes, I went in for an ear infection. It's been more than 20 years since I had an ear infection. I pitty my children, who seem to get them every year.
Theme Song- Eye of the Tiger!

Parenting Report Card
So, I gave myself a D- for my parenting skills for Monday. I should probably explain.
Growing up in California- if there was no mail (ie federal holiday) there was no school. Monday happened to be Columbus Day, for those of you who didn't know. Banks are even closed. But unlike the Postal Service, even federal holidays don't stop Utahans from going to school.
Here is jolly old Utah we have UEA. (UEA=vacation time). It is supposed to be a time for teachers here in Utah to go to teaching conferences, or something like that. Honestly, all of the teachers I know just plan vacations, along with the other families. This is a new concept to me so I am still not accustomed to planning a vaca in the middle of October. Church attendance during UEA is like church attendance during the bow hunt. NO ONE! Well, at least all of the cool people are gone. Just keep in mind, my family and I don't miss church during UEA or the bow hunt. What does this say about us? Yup- I know, we aren't cool. I have totally come to terms with this fact, I just feel bad for my kids that they are stuck in an "uncool" family.
Anyway, last week Kylie came home and told me they had Monday and Tuesday off of school. I said, "no way, you have Thursday and Friday off, I doubt they would let you Monday AND Tuesday off. Monday, I am sure you do because it is Columbus Day." She tried to convince me some more, but I would hear none of it.
Sunday night, I'm at work. I called Dalen while I was on break and he said he was keeping the kids up late for me so they would sleep in since there is no school. (I was the one that told him there was no school) Nice thought, but rarely works to keep the younger kids in bed.
Monday morning arrives, and so does my friend, Jenny, whose turn it was to pick up for school. WHAT? But there is no school... or is there? Yup, that's right ladies and gentlemen, there was school. See, because of UEA, they have moving the Monday off of school to next Monday so the kids get a 5 day break. Seriously, I failed in my parenting. I couldn't get Kylie out of bed when she didn't get into it until about midnight (not MY idea of keeping the kids up late, I would have said 10, maybe 10:30). So, when she woke up I got her ready. She cried. She doesn't want to miss any days of school this year because she heard that if you go everyday you get a ribbon at the end of the year. Anyway, I got her to school at the same time I took Jacob to school. At least he wasn't late.
What kind of Mom am I? I need to pay more attention to the calendars they send home with the kids. I thought those were just something to fill up my trashcan, but apparently they are supposed to help with daily schedules, reminders, and announcements from the school. OH!
(I decided on the ironic theme song this time around- Fight For Your Right by the Beastie Boys. Ironic because the Mom won't let the kids stay home who doesn't want to go to school, and it was opposite with me and Kylie.)

New Trailer alert... Before you start reading/watching this section turn off the music. You need to experience the fullness of the trailer. I think this is the best one they have put out so far. Makes me excited. My friends and I are going to the opening night - ya, you know who you are- you better be planning on it. We are going to be dead tired the next day, but well worth it, I am hoping!

Blog Stalking
Instead of spending time today blogging about the goings-on at my domain I thought I'd share my new obsession. Blog Stalking. I love, love, love to check out other people's blogs. I don't even know you, but I feel close to you! Sometimes I get so lost in Blog Stalking World that I have no clue how to get home (should have remembered to drop the breadcrumbs). The only option is to just turn on a new browser window and start all over. It is a vicious cycle. My kids are left to their own devices when I get on a roll. Will it end? Do I need to join BGA (blog stalkers anonymous)? If any of you have advice as to how to kick this addiction let me know. As for me, I have even added my own Blog Stalking side column for those who want to enjoy the laughs, too. I know there are others out there like me.

NOT YET!
AND this...
By the way- the snow is hiding it pretty well, but this is Dalen's new work car. Sweet, huh? Makes us look like we have money. HHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAA!! That's pretty funny. I might have to run to the bathroom!
Okay, now that I have stopped laughing I am going to get back to the snow thing. I think this is the hardest part about being a parent. Well, not really, but it is hard. I hate snow. You are probably asking me why I live in a place where it snows, well, I like it here except for the snow. I don't like to be cold. I don't like to do anything in the cold. On a snowy day I love to make hot chocolate in my COCOA-Motion Machine (love it!) and snuggle under a furry blanket watching a movie. Playing in the snow is not involved at all, but my kids really love it. Good thing for them we live in a cold place. Unfortunately, as the mom I am the one who gets to supervise and clean up after the winter fun. Here begins another winter!
(this one should be obvious- Let it snow, by Michael Buble)

That's my boy!
He was just so tired. Playing games on the computer is hard work, don't you know! Now, remember, I am a night owl and I got home pretty late, so Dalen was good enough to leave Jacob in this position until I got home so I could see the real thing! Great, isn't it?

Tag-Team Parenting
I have been so crazy busy with work lately that blogging hasn't really happened a lot, but don't get the idea that I haven't been thinking about what to write. I thought that I'd blog about what has been happening around here with me being gone at work so much. For those who wait on pins and needles for me to blog- I know you are out there- I am sure that you read the post about what my kids do when parents aren't around to supervise. There is more, oh yes, so much more.
Just the other day I was making dinner. Dalen came home and I called the kids into the kitchen to get up to the table. Britin saw me standing there, arms around Dalen, welcoming him home. She looked up at me and this is how the conversation went:
Britin: Why are you home, Mom?
Me: I don't have to work tonight.
Britin: You get to eat dinner with us?
Me: Yup.
(Then, looking at Daddy..._
Britin: Why is Dad home?
Me: He is done with work.
Britin: He gets to eat dinner, too?
Me: Yup.
Britin: Both of you??? (with a BIG smile on her face)
Sad day when this is exciting for your kids. Although, I really do hope that they always like having dinner with the whole family, but at this age, when it is a rarity to have both parents home at the same time it is just hard. I feel blessed to have a job that I can schedule around Dalen. Tag-team parenting is hard, but I am so glad that we are able to be the ones raising the kids we chose to have!
You also know that you have been working too much when for 2 weeks in a row you have forgotten to take your daughter to her dance class. I know that this is a fairly new addition to the weekly schedule, but I hate that she has missed twice now, due to my own oversight. I am running around with my head cut off.
I am so lucky to have a great husband who is trying so hard to make more $$$ for the family so I can work less. He is starting a new parttime job doing mortgages. Anyone interested??? Let me know. He gets paid just to give the presentation to people. He really wants me to be able to stay home with the kids permanently. In my mind I have often wondered if this is because he would like the house clean (I'd say cleaner, but really, you all know how I am, and I've already admitted to hating the bathroom). Then, I have wondered if it is because he misses falling asleep with my frozen feet rubbing up against his steaming, hot legs (nah, that can't be it). Then I have thought that he misses me making breakfast for him (but that really only happened for a couple of months, when I got home from work at 6am and got him off to work before crashing on the front room floor and letting the kids ransack the house around me). Or, maybe he is missing my awesome cooking. Let's face it, dinner is often not something I think about until just before dinnertime. What should we have? What is in the fridge/freezer? I think I am pretty good at fixing stuff in a pinch, if I haven't planned in advance. But, when I leave for work at hours before dinner time I haven't really planned anything out. Thank you to Burger King, Little Caesar's and Wendy's who have saved my children from starvation more than once.
I think I'll have to go with the first and last options. I am pretty sure Dalen would love to have a clean house and good food to eat. Life doesn't get much better than that, does it?
So, for those of you who have tried to call me and haven't had much success reaching me, keep at it. I haven't slipped into a coma, although one could describe my mental state as a coma when I am typing at a desk for 8-10 hours straight. Keep trying. I don't want anyone to forget me.
Oh, by the way, the unibrow and mustache are gone. Melinda (YEAH!) and I went for a girls' night out and got waxed. They actually had a consent form for those who are there for the Brazilian wax. Really? Is this something that people honestly think is a good idea? There are just some places on my body that I will NOT allow wax near. I'll let you all think about that one on your own. While we were there, there was a girl that came in for a nostril wax. OUCH! I remembered my friend Shanna telling me she has done this (sorry if this is outing you, Shanna). She told me whenever she does it she cries. Wouldn't a nosehair trimmer be better? Maybe that is what I will get Shanna for Christmas. Then she won't have to cry. I want to cry just thinking about is.
And finally, since I haven't included any pictures in this post because I haven't grabbed the camera for quick shots lately, here is a random one I found on the internet that I LOVE.
Theme song for this post, I know you all have been missing this part of my postings lately- "Home" by Michael Buble, because it is a place I love to be and have been missing.

It's MY tag...
I love my friend Melinda- who tagged me with this random tag and helped me to think of my oddities that I am about to share with the world. Don't be too scared, I'm still the same person you all know and love, but now you have a small glimpse into my mind- AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!
- I grew up in California. Since there was no snow the highways have bumps between the lanes (I don't know how else to describe it). When changing lanes I try to go right in between the bumps so as not to make any noise. This probably makes no sense to anyone but me, but hey, that is why I do it and not you.
- I learned to shoot guns when I was a young teenager. I am considered by NRA standards to be an Expert Marksman (the highest level- above sharpshooter). Since I frequented the gun range with my dad I also found out why he is partially deaf. It comes with the territory. I am now partially deaf. In fact, sometimes I am too embarrassed to ask someone to repeat themselves so I'll just nod and agree. If I have ever done this to you and it made no sense as to why I was doing it, now you know. SPEAK LOUDER!
- I hate cleaning my bathroom. Contrary to Melinda's obsession with the bathroom, I absolutely hate it. I will spend forever (okay, really just 30 minutes) cleaning my awful bathroom and it is dirty in 2.5 second. I have an awful tub that the stuff is peeling, so I can never get it really clean, the tiled floor/grout was never sealed so I can't get the floor to look even halfway decent and I can't reach behind the tub and underneath it to get that area clean. Sorry if you have ever had to endure my nasty bathroom. That is one that the kids will definitely be taking over very soon.
- I've never balanced a checkbook. I look at my account online and hope that all is well. I really have to work on this one since we are working hard to get rid of all our debt. I just never learned and since debit cards came into existence it is near impossible to have Dalen keep track of all he receipts he gets. Plus, I have worked almost nonstop since we have been married- I really don't have time (at least that is what I tell myself).
- For as long as I can remember, whenever my family would go on long trips, usually to come up to Utah from California, I would watch the mile markers on the side of the road and I would make sure that I blinked right in between the markers. Another scary one, huh?
- This one is for adult eyes only. If no one is home or I don't think about it, I will just grab whatever is easiest to eat for breakfast or lunch, which is usually some form of chocolate or cookie. I know it is not okay to eat crap for breakfast and lunch, it is just mostly because I am lazy.
- I don't really like pie. It is supposed to be an American favorite, but I hate flakey crusts. I love things that are soft and moist. When I eat Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving (or really anytime I am force to eat it) I will most often leave the crust.
